Artificial Intelligence in Politics-Let's Talk About It!
Artificial Intelligence or AI is the ability of a computer, machine, or software to perform a task that would normally be performed by a human being with human intelligence. As we all know, over the last few years, there have been quite a few advancements in development of AI programs and devices. Some examples include, Chat GPT, robots, self-driving cars, smart tv's and smart phones, social media, and personal assistant devices such as Siri and Alexa. With all of these advancements it seems AI is everywhere in everything we do, so who's to say it won't make its way into politics?
Many believe that as the use of social media within politics and elections will continue to grow, and that as this happens, it could lead to the use of AI in politic, especially in the upcoming 2024 election. In an interview with Forbes, Dr. Aubrey Jewett, associate professor and assistant school director within the School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs at the University of Central Florida., said, "Artificial intelligence will allow faster responses to real-time events on social media and assist with the microtargeting of voters that is already a hallmark of social media campaigns," (Suciu, 2023) This means that politicians who choose to utilize social media would be able to specifically target a demographic that fits their target market, they will be able to automate political messages, reach more voters, and much more. Additionally, AI could also be beneficial during the voting process in terms of collecting and calculating the votes.
On the other side of things, social media and AI could be used to negatively impact politics and the 2024 election. As we have previously discussed, fake news and the spread of misinformation is prevalent in social media, and as we introduced more AI, we run the risk of creating even more advanced ways to spread this misinformation. In the same Forbes interview, Dr. Jewett also said, " AI allows almost anyone with rudimentary computer skills to create fake pictures, videos, and audio that will easily fool the average person and even challenge digital professionals to spot them. A scary thought is that in a close election, it may be a clever 'deepfake' that damages one candidate and throws the election to their opponent." (Suciu, 2023) These sorts of actions can cause serious damages and create lasting effects.
